Yesterday evening was a great outing for photography. I headed into town to a specific location, and as I was passing by the park I saw a huge patch of mushrooms. Needless to say, a detour was made.
I don’t normally post multiple images in one day, unless they are all of the same subject and it adds to the post. Today I have three total images because the mushrooms here were all different. The top one was my favorite. It reminded me of the classic mushroom from fairy tales and cartoons. It was nearly perfect in shape and it stood out more than the rest.
These bunch of mushrooms speak for themselves, really. It looks like they are all battling for the same tiny spot of real estate.
These last mushrooms were cool because they didn’t look like any of the others. The first two pictures were the main shapes of the mushrooms. These two held a globe-shape look to them. I guess these three will bell out more like the others, but at this stage in their life, they are the “ugly ducklings.”
All of these photos were taken with my 50mm prime. I had to get nice and low in the grass to take these photos, which was pretty fun to do. The grass felt like a carpet. Most grass in this area is centipede grass, and its hard and pretty ugly. These type of grass reminded of NY a bit. On my 50mm I put on my circular polarizing filter because the light was a bit too strong. My first few images, at a nice open aperture were shooting at 1/4000sec. The filter helped drop that speed down and it also played with the light.
In post I had three main things. I touched up the light coming in from the side (I’m on this sunset kick as of late), I added some contrast, and sharpened up the images a little bit. That was pretty much it. I really tried my best when I was shooting to line up my shots the way I wanted them to be on screen; really payed attention to the composition. I think I managed that pretty well.
On a side note, I played with some self portrait shooting last night with my new flash. You should take a look over on my facebook page. While you are there hit the like button and share the page with your friends. The goal is to hit 100 likes by the end of this month. With your help that can be done easily!
Until tomorrow.

Every time I see a patch of these, they make me think of fairy rings and mystical things because someone once told me that rings of mushrooms were where fairies were born or something like that, haha!
Have you been getting a lot of rain in your area? I’m pretty sure the recent rainstorms we’ve been having are contributing to the population of mushrooms in my own yard. As I type this, the sky has darkened and the thunder announces another round!
These are lovely photos, Dan!
Thanks, Pixy. Yeah this past week was pretty off and on rain.
Gorgeous work! Love the light
Thank you very much.
Love this. I don’t think I would have ordinarily thought of mushrooms as a great subject before! You’ve changed my mind
Thanks, Lori. As I’ve come to learn anything can be a great subject. Or maybe anything is a bit of a statement. A lot of things can be great subjects, heh heh.
Dan…these are GREAT! I love when everyday things become art. Very good eye, truly!
Oh thanks, Rhonda!
Mushrooms really are rather cute, but they taste horrible! Great info about the polarizing filter. I really enjoyed your commentary about these photos.
Thanks, Melanie. I think commenting on photos not only helps others, and maybe entertains at times, but it also helps me out with my learning process. Glad you enjoyed them.
Great clarity, Dan!
Thanks, CK.
Can’t decide which one is my favourite, they all are great.
HAve a great weekend Dan!
Thanks, Pablo. You too!
Excellent work!
Thanks, Jim.
