50@50 Day 17: Fort Macon

1/800sec 50mm f/9 ISO 100

I wanted to end this short series with symbolic image. As the sun was setting on my adventure, it set on the Fort Macon as well. Yes, this secluded beach (in the evening) is the site of one of many Forts along the eastern coast.

When I was walking on the beach and got towards the end of the sound area, I noticed that I could see this flag and the cannons resting on the wall. I was a bit too far away though to make anything out in clarity. When I approached the road on my way back to my car, I was right in front of this scene. I framed up my shot and grabbed a few photos. I new I wanted to have some sort of dramatic shot here, so when I got home for post I worked away on bringing this image to life a little bit.

I played with this image a lot. Going right down the list to check each attribute and its effect on the image. Contrast gave a very cool silhouette look, but It was too dark. I added an adjustment brush on the grass and it made it glisten with the shine of the sun. I really liked that it was very strong on the left and almost invisible on the right. I wanted some blue in the sky, because the sun was very powerful in this shot. Tweaked a bit more and I was able to get a little blue on the far right. I kept the sun in the image, because I wanted the idea of the sun setting to  be incorporated in the shot. This would have been a great shot a few weeks ago for memorial day, but it works just as well today.

How are you finishing off your weekends today? Did you get to have fun, and go on any adventures? Leave the comments as always, and even critiques are welcome.

Until tomorrow.

  1. My first thought of this was the song Star Spangled Banner. I love the cannons on the side and the gradient adds a mysterious attitude to the entire photo. I think it turned out great. Thanks for sharing this one. (:
